City hall wedding photos: the plan for micro weddings and elopements

More and more couples choose small: city hall or a tiny ceremony with immediate family, followed by a great dinner. Wonderfully simple, until you look at photography. Wedding photographers understandably price in day rates, with elopement packages often starting around €4,000, while your entire official program might last ninety minutes with fourteen guests. A full package for a micro wedding is like a five-tier cake for two: beautiful, but not made to measure.

Good news: small weddings are actually the easiest to capture well with a smart plan. Three layers.

Layer 1: one or two professional hours, exactly where they count

If you want professional images, do not ask photographers for their wedding package; ask for a short session of one to two hours: the ceremony plus a brief couple session afterwards. Many photographers offer exactly this length as engagement or couples shoots at a fraction of a day rate. Be honest about what it is; some photographers love these jobs, others pass, and both are fair.

Layer 2: the ceremony itself, covered twice

A twenty-minute ceremony has no second take. So next to the (optional) photographer, always put a phone on a tripod for the vows and any speeches, started by one designated person who is not you; here is exactly how. Is a friend photographing your wedding? Then that tripod is the backup that lets them relax too. Storage is free; regret is not.

Layer 3: your guests are your photo team, especially at small weddings

Here a micro wedding has a secret advantage: the smaller the group, the closer everyone stands to the best moments. Fourteen guests at two meters produce more intimate images than two hundred at twenty.
