A friend is photographing your wedding: here is how to make it bulletproof

A good wedding photographer easily costs €2,000 to €4,000, and not every budget stretches that far. So what has happened for generations happens again: the friend or cousin with a nice camera gets asked. It can turn out beautifully, and it can go wrong; first-timer stories are full of failing cameras, blown-out skies and missed kisses. The difference between those outcomes is not the camera. It is the preparation. Here is the plan.

1. Make it a real agreement

Even (especially!) with a friend: agree on expectations. Which moments are sacred (ceremony, first dance, family photos), how long are they shooting, and during those hours are they a guest or the photographer? Nobody can toast and capture the kiss at the same time. A modest payment or a good gift makes the agreement serious, for both of you.

2. Hand over a shot list and a timeline

The biggest rookie mistake is not technique but overview: not knowing where to stand when. Give them a printed shot list of the must-have moments and walk through it together. Assign someone else to wrangle families for the group photos, so your friend can shoot instead of direct.
